Microsoft targets the web

Microsoft Corp plans to invest big bucks when it comes to web development so they will stand a chance to compete with Google Inc, even if it fails to acquire Yahoo Inc. chairman of the company Bill Gates said on Monday. Gates, who called the offer from Microsoft to Yahoo “very fair,” said Google is the only company with a “critical mass” in research on the Web. Microsoft needs a bigger piece of the market to create a more competitive and profitable web search.

“We can afford to make large investments in engineering and marketing that needs to be done. We will do this with or without Yahoo, “said Gates in an interview with Reuters. “But we also see that we would get there faster if we got Yahoo on our team said Gates, Microsoft’s largest shareholder.
