What’s the Google Page Rank Fuss All about?

Rumors are flying high that Google is making changes on its page rank algorithm and that some web sites are now seeing changes on their web page rank ratings on account of this Google page rank update. Some people do not think that a change is underway since their web sites’ page rank ratings are not showing any such changes. Whether or not it is true that Google is updating its page rank algorithm, one uninvolved observer can’t help but wonder what the Google Page Rank fuss is all about.

To understand why web masters and search engine optimization (SEO) professionals are either dreading or anticipating a Google page rank update, it is necessary that you understand what Google page rank stands for and what it does.

The Google page rank is an algorithm designed to measure a site’s importance for a certain keyword or keyword phrase query. Whenever a search engine query is made about “car insurance,” for example, Googlebot (the affectionate term for the Google spider or crawler) goes over the web sites it has in its index and returns the links of web pages that are relevant to this keyword phrase. The Google search engine results page or SERP displays web page links according to each site’s page rank rating. Thus, a high Google page rank is highly valuable to a web master. Only through a high page rank can a web master hope to attain a high position in SERP.

Google is one of the top search engines so your search engine of choice will most probably be Google. Therefore, to gain exposure to the general internet crowd, web masters would like to get top Google SERP positions.

Being on top of search engine results listing can mean the difference between high and mediocre web site traffic. Most search engine surfers do not even glance at the second or third pages of the SERP after a search. Thus, if a web site gets one of the top 10 spots in Google SERP, the higher the likelihood of his web site link getting clicked. This goes for both the main Google searches and for other search engines powered by Google.

When news that there is an impending Google update on page rank reaches web masters, those whose sites have high page rank ratings can’t help but get worried when they think that a Google update can mean a decrease in their page rank rating. Likewise, some web masters who are still engaged in an uphill climb towards Google rank supremacy are either dreading the change in case it makes them lose ground. Some web masters are anticipating the change, though, because a Google page rank update may mean a higher page rank rating for their sites.
