When people talk about search engines or search engine optimization, Google always comes to mind as the foremost search engine – which is a reasonable notion, since Google is indeed the most commonly-used search engine. At the same time, because of very frequent changes made to its search algorithms, Google is also one of the most SEO challenging search engines.

Getting the top spot in Google can generate hundreds or even thousands of search visitors every single day – sought after because they are highly targeted visitors that are looking for your page’s topic in particular.

Getting Your Site Indexed

When you have created your site and have populated it with top quality content, the next step is to have it indexed by the search engines.

There are three ways of accomplishing this: a direct search engine submission, a directory submission, or (Google’s preferred method) through an inbound link from a site that they have already indexed. Google’s preference stems from the belief that this is how to surf the web and thus, how the site should be judged.

The Upsides and Downsides of Directory Submissions

Most search engines give reasonable weight to directory submissions; the problem is that it may take a long time to be accepted or not. Keep in mind that directories are, essentially, large collections of websites that are categorized (and often, further sub-categorized) by human editors. These editors visit each and every site in order to determine whether a site is worthy of a place, and only if the editor decides that a site is acceptable is the site indexed.

The downside to this approach is that it can take weeks or months of waiting – with no guarantee of acceptance. Google has one of the most beneficial directories to use – the Open Directory Project, sometimes called as the ODP or DMOZ. Google does make use of their directory and, in fact, indexes it regularly – but it can still take two or three months for a response.

Submissions to Google – Advantage or Drawback?

Submitting directly to Google is a possible solution to the indexing issue. Google’s Add URL page is simple to use and quick to accomplish but again, the downside to this is the time between submission and acceptance. It can take as many as three months or longer; worse, Google does not always inform webmasters of their decision – chances are that you could be left without knowledge of your status for some time.

And Finally – Inbound Links

Inbound Links are the darlings of the Internet: the more inbound links you have, the higher you are in the search engine rankings. Google has an extremely high opinion of inbound links, and award points depending on how popular the linking page is. A link from a page with high page rank (PR) or one with high traffic count is granted more weight than a brand new page with few visitors or low page rank.

Theoretically, using the inbound link is usually much quicker. As a rule, Google indexes sites every month or so, but sites with regular updates also get indexed more often. Article directories that add content several times a day are indexed frequently – and provide an excellent opportunity for Google to index your site quickly, and have the satisfaction of gaining numerous links and some direct traffic.
